A tripod molecule with an azobenzene arm was designed as a single-molecular tip for noncontact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM), where photoswitching of the tip apex can change the probe function by the external stimulus. NC-AFM imaging on the synthesized molecules revealed that they can be strongly fixed on Au surfaces in isolated form and reversibly switch between trans- and cis-form by irradiation at selected wavelength of light.
