Transmission characteristics of laterally illuminated photonic crystal fibers for both Γ-K and Γ-M directions are investigated. From the numerical results obtained, it is found that a stop band is formed in the transmission spectrum for TE modes and light illumination towards Γ-K direction, even though a photonic band gap (PBG) in Γ-K direction does not exist. Such a pseudo-PBG can be used for photonic crystal fiber sensing applications as well as a true PBG.
