30 cases of the middle ear operation mainly included tympanoplasty were treated with “Cephalantin” which was offered by the Kakenseiyaku Company. The effect of this drug was recognized in 50 percent of the cases at single administration and in 80 percent of the cases at combined administration. The response was chiefly marked in the cases of serous discharge. The cases, having mucopurulent discharge, responded to this treatment when proper antibiotics were given. As a result of this experience, authers concluded that Cephalantin was available for the postoperative treatment of middle ear.
It was assumed that the effect on the epihelization of wound was resulted from a function of Cephalantin concerned with an activation of the reticuloendothelial system.
