The facial recurrent fibers of the carp Cyprinus carpio are distributed over the entire body surface except the head region via the posterior lateral line (ramus lateralis accessorius) and occipito-spinal nerves. The central projections of main branches of these two nerves were examined by utilizing the techniques of transganglionic tracing with horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and a three-dimensional image analyzer. The fibers of the trunk-tail branch which innervates the entire trunk surface including the pelvic, anal, and caudal fins project to the dorsomedial portion of the caudal half of the facial lobe. The anteriormost part of this projection area was only labeled when HRP was applied to the branch at the caudal periphery near the peduncle. The dorsal fin branch terminates in the most dorsomedial part of the caudal half of the facial lobe and overlaps extensively in the dorsal area with the projection area of the main trunk branch. The pectoral fin branch ends in the dorsolateral portion of the caudal half of the facial lobe. These results suggest that the anteroposterior axis of the trunk-tail is reprsented in the facial lobe in a posteroanterior axis.
